Taylor & Francis (2004) declared that Children's literature is typically defined as literature published for an audience predominantly constituted of children. There are some limitations to this criterion, such as disagreements regarding what types of books are appropriate for children. This category is not a genre in and of itself, any more than adult literature is a genre, although it does cover a variety of genres. Children's literature has existed since at least the 17th century when a combination of lower printing costs and increased attention to the education and enjoyment of children raised interest in this area of writing.
