Research Design

The objective of this research is to examine the translation of the passive voice from English into Thai found in two works of children’s literature, Charlotte’s Web and Peter Pan. After giving the brief information about this study in the two previous sections, give an overview of the aims of the current study. This leads the present research to use a mixed-methods approach (Creswell and Clark, 2007), adopting a combination of several methodologies to collect and analyze the data.

This research employs a qualitative data collection, which will describe the quality of the data in an illuminating manner and can lead to conclusions about what is possible; this research also employs a quantitative data collection, which is more objective and aims at making claims about universality, and this current study will count the frequencies of the passive voice found in those two children's literature.

Research Procedure

The data will be gathered from two works of children's literature, Charlotte's Web and Peter Pan, as mentioned in the previous section.

  1. Select the books and study the whole

  2. Extract passive sentences found in the English source text and Thai target text

  3. Make a list of all the passive voice found in both texts in MS Excel

  4. Analyzes the type of passive voice used in the Thai translations in comparison with English source texts

  5. Identify the frequencies of each type of Thai passive

  6. Determine whether all the passive explicitly or implicitly translated

  7. Identify whether the translation is the source language shining through

  8. Discuss the finding and provide the summary of the study
